Since this is my first post in this new blog, I thought it best to introduce myself and give you some of my background.
After working in publishing for almost ten years, I decided to give it up and try to go back to something that I really love: libraries. I worked in my college library for four years in Circulation, and after graduate school worked in the technical processing department until I found my first full-time position in publishing.
I currently work in two very different libraries. My first position is a technical assistant in the Technical Services department in a large, urban library. I've been in this position for almost a year. I do copy cataloging, processing and receiving of new books, and other projects.
My second position is newer (I've only been there a few weeks) at a smaller branch library in a quiet town. I'm a children's assistant, and part of my job is to conduct weekly story times for three different age groups: 2 year-olds, 3 year-olds, and 4-5 year-olds.
I love both of my jobs.
I am very interested in cataloging, and also love youth services. I read a lot of Juvenile and YA fiction, but that doesn't stop me from reading adult fiction as well.
Since I'm in the process of applying to graduate schools for my MLS/MLIS, I thought it would be great to document my journey in a blog. How original, right? =D
But I am a very hungry librarian. I'm hungry for ideas, books, and the knowledge that will help me become a great librarian someday. I've already had a lot of help along the way, and I'll make sure to give links and shout outs when appropriate.
I hope you enjoy my blog, and get something out of it. I'm a pretty blunt and honest person, so I won't hold back on my feelings and how things really go in my daily job duties.
And remember: I'm new at this! I'd love feedback and advice from all the experienced librarians out there. Please help me-I'll need it.
